CNA Feature: Learning Traditional Chinese, Calligraphy and Taiwanese Cuisine in Budapest

📰 Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) correspondent Liu Yu-ting recently visited our classroom in Budapest, and on October 6, 2026, CNA published a feature story on how Jade Mountain School (玉山學校) introduces Hungarian students to Taiwan through Traditional Chinese, calligraphy and food. Thank you, CNA, for helping more people see how Taiwanese Mandarin and culture are taking root in Hungary.

Highlights from the report

  • Founded by principal Li Yi-ying in 2019, the school became the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) in 2022 with the support of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC). It is the only school in Hungary offering Traditional Chinese learning.
  • Classes focus on Traditional Chinese characters, which help students understand the structure and logic of Chinese characters more systematically. Students who need it also learn to switch between Traditional and Simplified Chinese.
  • Beyond language lessons, cultural activities such as calligraphy, painting and cooking Taiwanese dishes, including Sesame Oil Chicken (麻油雞) and Pork Knuckle with Longevity Noodles (豬腳麵線), bring Taiwan’s winter life closer to students.

What our students said

  • Czudar Balázs, a lawyer who started learning Chinese for work, believes that learning Traditional characters may make the logic of Chinese characters easier to understand.
  • Krisztián, 11, has been learning Chinese for two months and tried Taiwanese food for the first time: “I can’t wait — it smells so good!”
  • Lana, a student from Syria, said Sesame Oil Chicken felt “very warm” and perfect for winter.

Thank you to every student who shared their learning journey with CNA, and to OCAC for its continued support. 🙏
